Plot Summary: The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known. Champagne. Rose petals. Candlelight. It was supposed to be a night of celebration for Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman). But after leaving a friend's wedding reception and returning to the house, everything had collapsed for the happy couple. Then came a 4 a.m. knock on the door and a haunting voice.

Is Tamara here?

Writer/director Bryan Bertino explores our most universal fears in The Strangers, a terrifying suspense thriller about a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. The confrontation forces Kristen and James to go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to survive.

I'm always looking for a new, good horror/slasher type movie these days. The cast is good, story is nice and simple (nothing over the top) but it was the line in the trailer that sold me..."because you were home" and the way she said it. I will be there opening weekend.

Posted by: FireFly's Enigma on May 29, 2008 at 12:17:50

Or was it it just "you were home"? You know what I mean. ;)

Just got back from the movie-my fiance both think it was the worst movie we've ever seen. I wanted to walk out half way through the movie but it ended before we had the chance. Please save your money. Nothing made sense and after the first set of scares it became monotonous.

The strangers had me thinking how someone can just kill you by not beging a killer like michael myers. The movie had a good plot and good scares the only bad thing about THE MOVIE IS THE ENDING they should had left it with the killing on the chair.

I went to see this film/movie on opening night with my teenage son. i was scared to death. alot of pop up scenes. a good movie and the terror of the actors seem real. i am trying to get the real story behind this movie. if you have any information please e-mail me.

I just saw this movie and it was scary as hell. The movie is based off murders that took place in cabin #28 they were called the Keedie murders and also they were inspired but the Manson murders

This was the BEST movie i have ever seen! It was very scary and it actually made me cry at the end... to think that the movie was based off true events! hah

Warning: some spoilers ahead...

So I've seen this movie yesterday. It wasn't as scary as people describe it since in many sceenes you could clearly see the 'Strangers'. The moview tried the same exact formula as been done many times in other movies. The whole thing did not look believable to me as if the killers spend too much time playing cat and mouse games with main characters. And the scene were the girl was running towards the guy with a shotgun and he didn't even have a chance to shoot at her because she was flashing the light in his face looked absolutely stupid..... I was really disappointed with the ending since nothing was explained outside of the fact that it was a random killing spree but since the killers were a family of some kinds (father, mother and daughter or at least it appeared to me this way) it would deserve an explanation or at least a hint of explanation of why these strangers decided to slowly terrorize and kill some unknown to them people.... In summary, the whole story did not look believable and the movie wasn't scarry... The last great horror/thriller that I've see was Steven Kings '1408' so I highly reccomend it to those people who did not see it before.

To add to the previous comments:

The moview is based on the real events: the fact that people were massacared in the house but what actually happened in the house is unknown so the whole story is just a product of imagination of the writer. FOr what I care one of the characters could have killed another one and then himself/herself and staged the whole thing. I would actually prefer this story line that what was in the movie. At least it would be great psychological thriller and not just another remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre...

I just saw this movie today! I've been trying to find out what murders it's based on and apparently it's based on the Keddie "Cabin 28" murders that happened in the 80's. The movie was great! The only thing that bothered me is that a couple of the scenes in the previews aren't in the actualy movie which really bugs me. Other than that, it's hard to scare me and this one really had me jumping.

The person who said the masks remind them of an orphanage is an idiot. seriously though. First of all Chris who connects murders to a orphanage filled with sad, lonely, innocent children?? Oh i know who a sick freak.

Posted by: Nellzy on June 8, 2008 at 01:12:59

okay, well i liked it it kept me on edge but it really went no where, idk what they ment at the end by "next time it will be easier"

Ugh, i think i truly need an explanation. plz and thanks.

In the beginning, there was a girl named "jordan" who called 911 frantic and said there was blood on the walls and everything. I dont remember seeing a jordan in the movie. and it was before the people even got killed. Does anyone know what that was all about??

Posted by: Mike on June 10, 2008 at 03:15:11

Wow, some people are REALLY dumb or at least the posts were. So I will try to answer some of the questions for the challenged. But first off the movie was GREAT.

Whenever a movie claims to be based on True events it will always be a loose interpretaion of a/several events, which is why you cant find any info on James Hoyt or Kristen Mckay, they never existed, these are fictional characters. Manson/Keedie Murders is probably right.

The Jordan character is not a female, it is one of the teenage boys who find the 2 victims at the end of the movie, and the begininng is a foreshadow scene of the 911 call that one must assume occurred!

"Next time it'll be easier" was meant to imply that the killers would terrorize and kill again...it is simply a line that was used, so that the viewer would think "OMG this people are sick!" Obviously not everyone got that!

It didnt remind anyone of AN orphanage, the masks reminded someone of the MOVIE the Orphanage, if you havent seen it then your bad!

So like I said big DUMMIES....it was great!

I am shocked to hear that anyone had even the slightest notion that this movie was close to scary. I was able to call the rest of the movie while I was mid way through it; except that ending. That made no sense what so ever. What was with the Christian packet that the boys give to the murderer at the end? Not to mention the quote, "Next time it will be easier," and the stabbed chick grabbing the boy and screaming. Other than that, there were no shocks, nothing gory, and it was not scary. That was a joke.

Hated it. Wasn't based on anything real, so why the crappy writing? If it's all fictional, then I need to see some vengeance.

I'm looking forward to the sequel with Bruce Willis - "Die Hard V: Meet the Strangers". Wheezy gets an axe to the sternum, Dollface is burnt to a crisp with a Bic Lighter and a can of Lysol, and Betty Boop drowns in a frontload washing machine (cotton/sturdy cycle).
