Oliver Stone in Talks for Helter Skelter

Source:Variety, J. Warner
May 19, 2009

Liz Smith, reporting on behalf of Variety, is hearing through the grapevine that Oliver Stone (Natural Born Killers, W) is circling a big screen version of "Helter Skelter."

The director is currently "in talks" with Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecuting attorney during the Charles Manson trial. Nothing is confirmed, however. Stone revisiting the '60s and taking on Manson? Feels like a natural choice.

"Skelter" was made into a tele-film in 1976, with Steve Railsback (Lifeforce) as Manson, and again in 2004, this time starring Jeremy Davies. Jim Van Bebber also made a pretty haunting Manson film of his own entitled The Manson Family.

The public fascination with people like Manson is disgusting. He does not deserve the recognition he gets. That kind of treatment only spurns on more misguided souls in search of immortality.

Oliver Stone used to make incredible movies with heavy messages to them. He shouldn't be reduced to this kind of thing. Even if it makes Manson look 'bad' it will still only serve the man's evil legacy.

You know, that's exactly why I didn't like Zodiac. From the guys letters in the film, it was clear that all he wanted was to be immortalized through fame from killing. It was disappointing to see that his wish was granted.

andrew... and you think "natural born killers" is any different because it was fictional? i love movies that involve serial killers but does that mean i'm gonna go out and kill someone? no it doesn't. i think this movie could be great if stone did it the right way. instead of focusing on just the brutality of the murders, focus on the cult aspect. i've always wondered how a five foot nothing, 100 pound man could have such an affect on these people. some of them were on all fours barking like dogs outside the courthouse for **** sakes! why? if stone really is working with vincent bugliosi, i'll get my answer. that guy knows manson inside and out. that to me would be worth the price of admission.

Yeah, you first two are morons. First of all the Zodiac is dead - so what if he's immortalized - he doesn't know it. Manson is in prison forever, who cares what he thinks? A movie about him isn't going to make him more famous or infamous than he already is.

Plus - it's part of history. So, what, now? No more movies about Hitler, the Civil War, slavery, etc? People are such pansies.

Wait, when did Marilyn Manson go to prison?!?

Ohhhh... THAT guy, from history.

Wow, looks like Oliver Stone knows his demographics; he's making movies for people who are too old to know how to download 'em. LOL.

Manson is and always has been a true visionary and a messiah of the modern times. He has seen it all and yet tells of thigs yet to come - he is the true voice and the one to take us into the next path of this world, he is the truth and the vision - repent, all you junkies of deciet and lies - accept your part in this tragic and pathetic play that you call the world. He is the voice and the truth.

Other then being a Twisted SOB I fail to see why this is on here as a horror movie. Manson got others to do his work for him, it's not like Ed Gein making d corpse trophies for himself or anything. Unless this is going to be a 2 hour loop of the actor playing Manson carving Nazi symbolism into his head I really don't see the point.

rob zombie should do a manson film, its his style that would bring a brutal reality to the movie!

Posted by: Andrew on May 19, 2009 at 20:46:06

The reason I made that first post is because of people like Marcus Blake and his 'Manson is messiah' bull****.

And Nunya, I never claimed that history shouldn't be documented or explored. However, we're not talking about a truthful documentary or in depth interview with the man (and there have been plenty of both). We're talking about an exagerated and likely highly fictionalized account of his life. Think before you say something.

Also, Nunya, interesting that you KNOW the Zodiac is dead. I know people think that mainly because Arthur Leigh Allen died in 1992 but he has never been conclusively proven to be the actual person. Fincher's Zodiac was a brilliant movie and all but again, exagerated and highly fictionalized, not the actual truth.

Rob Zombie should do this film, I second that...it could be right in his wheel house.

As for anyone who says doing a film about him is detramental, I disagree. The fact is that film is just that, film. Crazy's will get their medecine from somewhere whether it's this or another with a similar level of violence. The fact is that Manson amounted to nothing but a sicko who drove others to do his work. None of what he said was true and everything he did was just bull ****. It actually might be good for some potential cult followers out there to see who people like this really are.

Posted by: Nunya on May 19, 2009 at 23:11:34

Really, you think so? Because serial killers just don't stop killing and stop there MO just like that. But the Zodiac stopped when Arthur Allan died. Even if it wasn't Allan and somebody else that somebody else is most likely dead, too, for the same reason. These ****ers don't stop, they just don't. I wasn't just basing that off the movie either. So, what if it's highly fictionalized, etc, etc. Who care? My point is that your point is stupid. It doesn't glorify these people and no matter what you do you're going have morons like that fruitcake who left that Manson quote or whatever. He probably only did it because of the post you left anyway.

What makes you think Zodiac is highly exaggerated anyway? It's based off a book that the real guy involved in the case wrote and it stuck to it pretty much. Do your fact checking first. Hell, pretty much, the movie told you that. And what says that Oliver Stone's movie is going to be highly exaggerated? Hell, W. was pretty dead on and even though he hates W. he treated him pretty well. Fox News couldn't even say anything about it...well, most of them anyway. So, why judge before anything comes out?

How about Manson the musical? Or Manson on ice? You could have The Muppets do Manson. Sad thing is we all have a voyeuristic side to us and maybe its a human failing but we are excited and interested in people who do these terrible things. Anyone who steps outside the accepted perimetre of accepted behaviour is fascinating and sickening at the same time.

I've got 4 hours of late 2008 and new 2009 talks with manson recorded live from Corcoran Prison where he discloses a lot of info. of his life and the Aug. '69 crimes. I have letters and also from Tex Watson-the slayer of tate and labianca. there are several things the public never knew. Stone is doing the project and Charlie will not talk to him because of Bugliosi's involment. I willbe revealing the tapes this August on the 40th anniversary of the murders. They are valuable.

If anyone can take this story and make it come to life would be Oliver Stone. August 9, 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the Manson slayings. I hope Stone decides to take on this challenge because I think he would do a great job.
