UPDATED: Child's Play Remake in the Works

October 22, 2007

While many of producer David Kirschner's recent movies with his partner Corey Siniega, such as the biopic Miss Potter and the upcoming Martian Child, might not necessarily be "Shock-worthy", Kirschner's second film, Child's Play roughly twenty years ago kicked off a popular horror franchise that has inspired many imitations and four sequels.

ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to interview Kirschner for his upcoming movie where he surprised us by announcing that they were working on another "Chucky" movie, which would be a remake of the original Child's Play. (But surely, we all knew this was coming, right?)

"We're discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning," Kirschner told us. "The next one we're going to do is we're going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is."

UPDATE: A bit of a misunderstanding from our original conversation, which David was nice enough to rectify. They've been talking to Don Mancini, writer of all the films and director of Seed of Chucky, to actually direct the remake, something that was a bit unclear. David told us, "Don has been my partner from the beginning of this franchise and has some very very creepy and scary ideas about going back to the
original and giving it some more bite that we believe will satisfy the appetite of today's horror fans (and loyal Chucky fans, as well.) Our hope and plan is that Don will write and direct the film and he and I look forward to getting the studio on board with us asap."

That certainly sounds very promising!

Of course, the age-old question of "Why?" immediately came up. "Look at 'Halloween'," he quickly responded. "It's kind of commerce to keep the franchise going, and another reason to go see it. For me, it's exciting, because the first one was really scary and then from there, we kind of… my favorites are 1 and 4. I love 4, it really makes me laugh and I think Jennifer Tilly is so great, but just the idea of going back to where we were the first time around and I think for me, it's almost 30 years later for me as a filmmaker from where I started to now, and the idea of taking some skill that maybe I didn't possess then and putting it towards the next film, I think could be exciting."

Would they possibly use the same script? "I think it would be pretty close to it, that's for sure, but there's some other things that we're exploring also, and some twists that we don't want the audience to expect, as far as a couple deaths, where you think you're going in one way and you're going to go in another way as a result of knowing it and it being such a popular franchise." These new developments may include learning more about Charles Lee Ray, although they're discussing whether series regular Brad Dourif will be back in that role and once again voicing Chucky.

But don't just assume that because we're well into the 21st Century that Chucky will be any sort of CG motion-captured creation. "It'll be an animatronic doll, like we do all of them, but animatronics have grown from when we did the first one 20 years ago. We just did the commentary on the 20th Anniversary of it, and all the stars, the little kid Andy Barkley, all of that, so that's coming out in January/February."

Stay tuned to ShockTillYouDrop.com for more news as things develop.

I think that they should just continue the Chucky legacy. But this time it needs to be horrifyingly scary. I think that they should bring in "Rob Zombie and/either/or Stephan King. The movie would be awesome. I am a very big Chucky fan. I love Chucky movies. I stand behind what I say.

I believe this remake will be awesome. you know what would make it ass kicking though, if some of brad dourif's looks kind of merged with the face of chucky to have an almost to human plastic like face. Now think about that, wouldn't you think that could be scary as hell, the dolls face and brad's face making almost a whole new face. That damballa guy did say to chucky that he was becoming human again, so why not do that. It's an interesting twist, that and making the doll almost life size to, instead of short like that.

This is so cool. Its about time they come around to remaking Childs Play. This is gonna be actually preety interesting. Come on..you actually think people arent gonna go see it. Of course they are!!! Its the Remake of the 1st one..Its not GRANDPA CHUCKY or CHUKYS REVENGE ON HIS WIFE...LOL Its the REMAKE OF THE 1st one. Im excited to just think about it. Just Imagine all the things they can add to this movie... Like Chucky actually getting into An actual body this time (well maybe not)..But just imagine...its almost 30 years later..Just Imagine all the crazy things they can add to the movie. Are we gonna learn more about Charles Le Ray and his voodo rituals? Will chucky scare the crap out of more kids rather than just Andy Barkley? Will chucky look more REAL??...This Is Going To BE GREAT!!

Why do they dont leave child‘s play? I like the new Chucky (seed of chucky and bride of chucky) more. Why do they dont make a movie like that. And the remake wouldn't have much success because any Chucky fan have seen child‘s play.

Well, parts 1-3 are very solid films. Part 2 was definitely the glossiest of the original trilogy and it's always been my least favorite. Chucky was psychotic as hell in parts 1 and 3 and I love it! The aspects of what they were going for in Bride and Seed of Chucky were good but they strayed away from formula which was horror, not horror comedy. ****, Seed of Chucky was practically one long gay joke for ****s sake. Parts 4 and 5 are welcome in my collection but are like the ugly step children lol. They are going back to basics with a remake i hope but i really wish tom holland was directing it again but we can't have our cake and eat it too.

****face

I cannot begin to describe how lame what you just said is...

i'm for the first time on this site speechless

Do tell. I'm curious. With such an original name like Charles Lee Ray you couldn't be wrong about anything, huh? I'd like to hear your take on the matter.

It would be cool if chucky went to William Penn High school to find a new body to transfer his soul into and meets a young boy name Zasckery Casalvera and finnaly transfered his soul into that kid body but became a good person and had made new friends with his new body.

Haha brandon
That was a reply to the person under the name "**** face"

and he was asking for it saying they should continue doing the gay ass bride and seed of chucky movies. That offends me and should offend any real fan of chucky.
He NEEDS this remake and I know you're on board but this kid isnt. And he is talking out of his ass. Normally I dont care everyone has their opinion but its people like that that want chucky as this joke.
When he is not that at all. He is an icon of HORROR not horror comedy.
Or atleast he WAS.
so chill.

Hey Charles Lee Ray, not too smooth there buddy. Re-read what i wrote. I did not in any way, shape, or form say that i liked Bride and Seed more than the first 3. No ****in way are those 2 better than the first 3. Read it very slowly again and again if you need to til that comes across. It says that I liked the first 3 better than what the series became which was Bride and Seed of Chucky. Stating that they strayed away from the straight up horror fashion to horror comedy which was wrong of them to do. Since the original writers of all the chucky movies are going back to the roots of what made Chucky great in the first place which is psychotic and creepy is why i'm looking forward to the remake. Learn to read ****face.

The first Child's Play was the only one that succeeded in startling me, the others were just fun to watch. I do enjoy chucky making me laugh but I want the remake to be scary, not a bloodbath. I love chucky, but seeing a doll murder people doesn't reinforce horror like Halloween does, because that can happen. If they can make the remake one that makes you believe chucky could happen, then it might actully be scary...

Posted by: CHARLESLEERAY on May 22, 2009 at 02:21:26

wow i think YOU need to learn to read. NOTHING I SAID WAS TO YOU. I said brandon that message was for the person under the name S-h-i-t-face.And now because apparently you cant read and think your special even tho i mentioned his name and not yours in my first post for some reason you're talking ****. incredible.

I like very much.

Posted by: vengence on July 21, 2009 at 16:02:47

i want more news like information on his new design how will he look who is the new cast and will it be an hour like other movies i have not seen a horror movie 2 hours before i hope the remake is long and entertaining

Posted by: Space on July 21, 2009 at 17:01:18

I love how he was on the verge of saying most of the Chucky movies blew, lol.

I actually liked 1-3, with 1 being the best by a mile. For me, 4 and on were way too cheesy and had too much comic relief and not enough terrifying killer doll moments that would give little kids nightmares.

Posted by: Yung-Action on July 29, 2009 at 04:20:09

about time a Remake I think this movie will turn out to be good.. but the last two movie's suck ass because they wasnt scary at all.. more like a comedy rather than a horror film for the last two movie's they made..but child's play 1-3 was the best that had me scared when I was a kid couldnt go to sleep for week's after I watched it..always's thought the doll was under my bed lol..

Posted by: Charles Lee Ray on July 29, 2009 at 05:09:03

Who says I'm not under your bed?

Posted by: j0ekid on August 8, 2009 at 15:21:59

I can't wait , this is gonna be good and another good thing is that Brad Dourif is still doing the voice of chucky , this should be good
