This is definately unfortunate, as a fan of Kitamura's japanese films, I've really been looking forward to seeing his first American film, knowing how deeply he loves American cinema, and how much it has inspired him (many Hollywood films are often reflected in his films).
Here's hoping they move the film away from summer movie season all together. The film stands a much better chance of being a success in the fall when they competition isn't so heavy, and the film doesn't have to be saddled in between weekends of warring franchises.

I think it is a smart move to get out of May. Unless you are Michael Bay or Steven Speilberg right now, you don't want to go up against The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Not too many people know of Kitamura's films in Japan. I do and I love them. But since he is new here, he needs a better time slot and he is smart for pulling out.

They'll push it back to October. And in October they'll decide that they can't have it compete with their own SAW 5 so they'll delay it to May 2009.

They should release it sometime at the end of August like a go away summer flick to end the summer. The usual October just in time for Halloween. If they do release in October it should be a week before "Saw 5" or a week after it because Saw franchise has a huge fanbase so, I don't think it a good idea to compete against a already well know franchise. Since it his first american movie you want it to be successful. I hope Lionsgate is smart enough to choose one of the alternative because I know they want both of their film to do good on opening day.
