First Look at Dorian Gray
Source:ShockTillYouDrop.com

Lensing has begun at London's Ealing Studios on Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray, an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story that producers are calling a "visceral, dark horror story." Shock received a first look at the production through the photo you see below featuring Ben Barnes, as Gray, and Colin Firth.
Gray tells of a corrupt young man who somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.

Well, Dorian Gray is about the superficiality of the physical beauty and the spirit corruption through the limitless cult to the carnal pleasures. The history is about a very beautiful man whose physical beauty, inocence and immaculate soul captivated everyone. I think it does not matter if Dorian is blond or not, Ben has the deep and essential beauty the book talks about. Ben's beauty goes further the physical level, I guess is due his dashing personality. I think Ben has the same magnetism as Dorian in the book, which is the important issue in the movie plot. Dorian Gray was written in 1890 when the beauty models where different. Ben's beauty is more adjusted to today's beauty canons.

Yes, Oscar Wilde did admit he based Dorian on an image of himself (and he wasn't ashamed to say he was gorgeous..ha ha) but the actual character Dorian Gray in the book was depicted as a blonde, a very fair blonde to be exact
and movies never take this into consideration, Lestat was also quintessentially blonde but they let Stuart Townsend play him...oh! as well as they let him Dorian too (movie people tend to like giving this dark haired guy blonde characters) and as much I like him in that movie, I still couldn't get over the hair, I'm sorry but if you are truly loyal to the books little things will always be wrong and they will bug you,no matter if you think the movie was good or not
and just to add, yea Barnes has a very classical beauty and they did need to find some one with that kind of elegance, but they still could have done better
but who cares about any of that because Collin Firth is in this movie and he's the best ever!!!

But... he looks so sinister. He looks swarthy. He looks like a vampire. He doesn't have that childlike, angelic purity about him that is so central to the book's theme.
I've seen a lot of people discussing this film saying that they like the casting because he has that hot-but-sinister look, but that's COMPLETELY missing the point--Dorian is never supposed to look sinister. Even after living a life of sin and doing horrible, horrible things, he's supposed to look like a sweet, rosy, golden child. Dorian's appearance was so important and meticulously described in the book that I can't believe they ignored that.

Yes, in the book Dorian is supposed to be angelic and childlike. But, it's difficult to find a decent actor who matches with that description. Ben is a very good looking man, and his looks match with a modern day audience and it also matches with the movies genre; a gothic horror. Because he has, like you said, a very sinister look about him.

this is taken from chapter 2 of the book,
"Lord Henry looked at him. Yes, he was certainly wonderfully handsome,
with his finely curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, his crisp
gold hair. There was something in his face that made one trust him at once."
I assume gold hair is something like dark blonde.. hmm?
but it doesnt matter that much, I think the dark haired actor fits really well. ^_^
