More Friday the 13th Special Editions Coming
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
January 5, 2009
Keeping the Friday the 13th excitement going (2009 is truly the year of Jason's return), Paramount Home Entertainment is currently prepping special editions of Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning and Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives for release later this year. I can't delve into exact special features just yet as they're still being worked out, however, I can tell you that they will include special "fan" commentaries.
The inseparable team of Adam Green (Hatchet) and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) paired up to chat about The Final Chapter. On A New Beginning expect to hear Steve "Uncle Creepy" Barton, of DreadCentral.com, and horror journalist Staci Layne Wilson muster up some love for the Jason-less sequel. And yours truly joined Barton to bestow our appreciation for Jason Lives (my favorite of the series).
I talk more about the recording, which took place in Santa Monica last Friday, in my blog right here. Paramount's special editions of the first three films street on February 3rd. Click here for artwork!

Rotten you're so freaking lucky...Part 6 is my all time favorite Voorhees. Looks like things are finally coming full circle for our beloved slasher genre.

THANK GOD FOR FINAL CHAPTER! I actually thought paramount was insane when they didn't announce it with the first three films, but good that its getting a special edition! I'm hoping to see final chapter PACKED with alot of new extras. Also, I loved Friday part 5, its a good movie. Yeah no actual Jason, but atleast it centered around the voorhees legened.

Excellent! JASON LIVES is definitely a highlight of the series for me, as well! Can't wait to see what other bonus goodies will be included. I predict these movies will be out in time for the remake's release on DVD.

I would love to see all of them in blu-ray that would just be wow!! if that happen's that way and be uncut.

the uncut part 4 only has a couple of character development scenes. i HOPE there's some uncut gore for it. i LOVE part 4.

They better be UNCUT or I'm not biting.

Yeah, if it's just the previous DVDs with added "fan commentaries" Paramount can go and screw.

This is good news but it would be GREAT news is if they would also come out on Blu-ray.

dammit! no part 7...

Special "fan" commentaries sounds like the dumbest commentary idea I have ever heard. Worse than those damn video commentaries where you watch people watching the movie. When I listen to commentary I want the filmmakers and actors to provide interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits that we don't otherwise know. Stories on how the movie came to be, how the story developed, how they picked which actors, etc. Anyone who's watched the movie could provide a commentary, doesn't mean it's interesting at all.

Fair enough, ARTaylor.
I'd like to think I brought a bit of info and insight to the commentary (when I'm not laughing at Creepy) from a journalistic point of view as so many other journalists I've looked up to have done in the past (Kim Newman and his HALLOWEEN III UK commentary comes to mind). Granted, this will somewhat be my first produced commentary so I'm getting used to the format, but I hope to be asked to do more.
Besides, you'll still get your primary commentary track with the real talent behind the film who deserve their platform to speak.

I wonder if Part 6 will include the music video for Alice Cooper's "Man Behind the Mask." That would be nice!

I don't know if part 6 is my favorite or not (it's so hard to pick a favorite) but it definetely has a special place in my heart as it was a certain 7 year old boy's fist exposure to both Jason and Alice Cooper. The beginning of the end for me, lol.

It's interesting that in an era of rampant DVD piracy and economic downturn, Paramount finally has the sense to give these films a proper release and pick up all the money lying on the table. I think it's great that they gave up the rights to "My Bloody Valentine" to Lionsgate. The uncut MBV DVD will make a mint, and given their contemptuous relationship with their properties, I'm glad Paramount won't be among those raking in the cash.

ryan i'm too happy for u...and for us!

I want to see them uncut damnit! There actually was a lot of gore cut out of The Final Chapter. Even Jason's death scene was a lot gorier. Jason's death in the R rated version is bloodless. They actually filmed an alternate bloody take for Jason's demise. I read about it in the Crystal Lake Memories and Making Friday the 13th books.

*sigh* Great press release. I lie of course. What a waste. Granted, better features may be disclosed later, but this is just stupid. Fan commentaries? LAME. Give us cut footage. 1-3 will always be the best anyway, it's a nice little cohesive story when watched as a single story, and I'll throw in 4 because it "concludes" that particular arc. 5 is okay for what it is, 6 is when it started getting all crazy and just kind of dumb, even for a horror movie. And yes, my opinion matters that much. So there.

Part 6 is my favorite, too - the zombification of Jason begins. They took things to a new level in that one after the bait n' switch that was Part 5.
That corny Alice Cooper song isn't too bad either :P.
Posted by: joe asylo on January 6, 2009 at 16:05:17
man this is great they are allowing actual horror film makers givent their take on the franchise.
Posted by: NPH on January 6, 2009 at 17:59:43
I agree with ryan rotten about loving jason lives the most out of the series.
Posted by: Mamma C. on January 6, 2009 at 18:47:15
Not very excited or interested in buying these if this is all the special features there are. Hopefully much better things will be announced. I agree with TW, 1-3 are the best as a single story arc, 4 isn't bad for being a "conclusion" but still a bit off, 5 is a bit weak but not bad for trying something new while keeping the same main characters around, but from 6 on it gets weird and hokey. I admit that 6 on are enjoyable in their own ways, but they definitely continually decline in merit. Maybe there's some CUT STUFF from 6 that would change my mind? Those are features I think we all want.

Uuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh... can we get some real features please? Something worth a "news" report? Something of interest from ANYONE actually involved with the films? Can we delete part VIII and Jason Goes To He** from existence? BETTER YET... how about all that cut footage from part 7 put back in so MAYBE, oh sweet maybe, it becomes something worth watching? Or is this just more eventual quadruple dipping? The series started so well, and then all the big hulking supernatural mumbo jumbo that started with 6 (which is an okay film, but could be better and you all know it) ruined it all. Even part 4 and the introduction of Tommy is off course. But with cut footage back in, maye they'd be BETTER? Or at least something I'd pay for. Otherwise, no. And I know I'm not alone.
Posted by: ARTaylor on January 7, 2009 at 01:52:27
Well Ryan Rotten, my question would be what could you bring that would make it interesting? How is it not going to end up like a talking version of any Tom's, Dick's, or Harry's blog? What could you bring that I myself, as a fan, wouldn't already know about a twenty year old movie? Especially if the filmmakers are going to do one of their own.
The only "fan" commentary I can understand is for older movies like Dracula and Frankenstein where 1) the commentator has done extensive research into the film like reading personal journals, notes, etc and 2) the filmmakers tend to be dead and this is the best we can have.
Why would I sit through 86 minutes of you, or any "fan" for that matter, talking?
Posted by: Weinberg on January 7, 2009 at 02:35:38
See, if they were just "fan" commentaries, then yes, that would probably annoy me. But when the "fans" are also filmmakers, journalists, and film critics, I think that's actually pretty cool.
Too bad for me I don't live on the West Coast, eh? ;) Can't wait to check out all three chat-tracks.
Posted by: Festy on January 7, 2009 at 03:36:56
i'm confused as to why paramount or you think we want to hear anyones opinions on these movies other than those involved in making these movies?
sorry man, we can get your opinions and theirs on a message board, give me someone from the movies.
obviously too cheap for that, Zito on part 4 would of been the all to obvious choice.
