EXCL: Barker Praises Laugier, Talks Pinhead Design
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
February 13, 2009

Breaking away briefly from writing the next installment in his "Abarat" series, Clive Barker phoned ShockTillYouDrop.com to catch up on a number of topics - from the forthcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release of Midnight Meat Train to Pascal Laugier's take on Hellraiser. Of the latter, Barker tells us he feels confident Laugier is going to bring something unique to the table.

"I fuckin' love Martyrs," he enthuses. "I'm glutton for intensity, extreme stuff. Martyrs is certainly extreme, it's a movie that has courage and commitment. [Pascal] is someone who really, really cares about horror movies. I'm supposed to be seeing a treatment soon. I'm not certain but I believe he is going to back to the first movie but not with an obsessed loyalty. He's taking the first movie as a launching board, a rock model, but there are things you can obviously do now both visually and sexually. It was always a sexual movie. The censors [when I did the original] told me I had to cut a scene because it has spanking in it. You're telling me I can have the skinning, but I cant have the spanking? It's a different time, so I'm excited."

At the beginning of the month, Gary Tunnicliffe - who had served dutifully on the Hellraiser sequels as the makeup FX artist - used Fangoria as a platform to show off his redesigned interpretation of Pinhead, a role made famous by Doug Bradley. Barker admits for the first time publicly that this take (see it here) does not work for him. "The whole point about Pinhead is that he is geometrically severe. Very measured and the energy of the character comes out of the fact that you have surgical precision which is part of a much larger, sadistic, maybe masochistic, design. By turning the bloodless cuts or scarifications into bloody, irregular gashes removes the point of what made the character interesting in the first place."

More with Barker to come!

i never really liked hellraiser, but i did like it if they would have used that ending they wanted to use in freddy vs jason, where pinhead was at the end.

YAYA FRIDAY THE 13TH TONIGHT

I agree with Barker, the current Pinhead design is dumb. It looks sloppy and impatient. I'm not saying that Pinhead and the Cenobites can't be modified, just that this ain't right. Just like most remakes today, it is completely unnecessary and harkens to the complete lack of courage and originality on the part of directors, producers, actors, and Hollywood in general. The only true horror in movies today is the demise of the imagination...it literally tears my soul apart. Very sad. (RIP Pinhead and Co.)

I saw "Hellraiser" at the theatre back in the day and was blown away as Clive Barker opened new doors to horror. Part 2 was also excellant then they turned absymal with 3 & 4 and I didn't even bother with the rest. I could certainly do with out a remake but I'm going to try and embrace it as it could be good. I like the idea of "Martyrs" director [the French are making great horror movies right now]and i would like the see the cenobites alternate, not radical, but a little just to give it a different look and feel. Same goes with story. I pretty sure we can expect a very bloody and brutal Hellraising.

And I agree with Papercut well said comment.

I would like the director's comment reguarding his take on Pinhead. Last article he said his "pinhead will be COMPLETELY different", which could mean a lot of things.

We want to be shocked/frightened that this demon from hell is standing in front of us and wants to take us to hell. So he better serve up.

"The censors [when I did the original] told me I had to cut a scene because it has spanking in it."

Hilarious.

A. Papercut, it has already been announced that they will not be doing anything remotely like the Fangoria spread, which tells me that they are smart enough to know it didn't work either.

I prefer Hellbound to Hellraiser. I feel that Hellraiser was too choppy and unrefined, it lacked depth and a cohesive linear story. I hope the newer version will focus more on well-rounded story-telling and character development than in the original. But with comments like, "now we do more more sexually." I'm not very optimistic.

Fu(k yeah Hellraiser is fantastic. I kinda liked the new drawing as a rough copy. That being said thats all it should be. The open wounds I like. They just need to clean up the pin positions.

How can people still complain when even Barker is excited about a remake of Hellraiser coming this way? Hell, he wants it so that they can make it more attuned to what he intended in the first place. God, crybabies.

On the Pinhead concept, I'd much rather take a step away from the nails-- I would like to see hundreds of needles (more tactile to viewers) on the character's head.
