UPDATED: Child's Play Remake in the Works
Source:Edward Douglas
October 22, 2007

While many of producer David Kirschner's recent movies with his partner Corey Siniega, such as the biopic Miss Potter and the upcoming Martian Child, might not necessarily be "Shock-worthy", Kirschner's second film, Child's Play roughly twenty years ago kicked off a popular horror franchise that has inspired many imitations and four sequels.

ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to interview Kirschner for his upcoming movie where he surprised us by announcing that they were working on another "Chucky" movie, which would be a remake of the original Child's Play. (But surely, we all knew this was coming, right?)

"We're discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning," Kirschner told us. "The next one we're going to do is we're going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is."

UPDATE: A bit of a misunderstanding from our original conversation, which David was nice enough to rectify. They've been talking to Don Mancini, writer of all the films and director of Seed of Chucky, to actually direct the remake, something that was a bit unclear. David told us, "Don has been my partner from the beginning of this franchise and has some very very creepy and scary ideas about going back to the
original and giving it some more bite that we believe will satisfy the appetite of today's horror fans (and loyal Chucky fans, as well.) Our hope and plan is that Don will write and direct the film and he and I look forward to getting the studio on board with us asap."

That certainly sounds very promising!

Of course, the age-old question of "Why?" immediately came up. "Look at 'Halloween'," he quickly responded. "It's kind of commerce to keep the franchise going, and another reason to go see it. For me, it's exciting, because the first one was really scary and then from there, we kind of… my favorites are 1 and 4. I love 4, it really makes me laugh and I think Jennifer Tilly is so great, but just the idea of going back to where we were the first time around and I think for me, it's almost 30 years later for me as a filmmaker from where I started to now, and the idea of taking some skill that maybe I didn't possess then and putting it towards the next film, I think could be exciting."

Would they possibly use the same script? "I think it would be pretty close to it, that's for sure, but there's some other things that we're exploring also, and some twists that we don't want the audience to expect, as far as a couple deaths, where you think you're going in one way and you're going to go in another way as a result of knowing it and it being such a popular franchise." These new developments may include learning more about Charles Lee Ray, although they're discussing whether series regular Brad Dourif will be back in that role and once again voicing Chucky.

But don't just assume that because we're well into the 21st Century that Chucky will be any sort of CG motion-captured creation. "It'll be an animatronic doll, like we do all of them, but animatronics have grown from when we did the first one 20 years ago. We just did the commentary on the 20th Anniversary of it, and all the stars, the little kid Andy Barkley, all of that, so that's coming out in January/February."

Stay tuned to ShockTillYouDrop.com for more news as things develop.

The thought of it returning to horror is absolutely excellent. As a Child's Play fan I'm pleased to hear that there would be much more of Charles Lee Ray, however I know I'll be disapointed if Brad Dourif isnt in this film. Who else can act as Chucky?! Hopefully there's no too over the top humour, too, right? We Chucky fans are blood thristy for true horror! I look forward to learn more!...Thank you!

this freakin movie scared me so bad when I was about 9...it scarred me till i was 14...I had nightmares every night, I couldn't do good in school because the nightmares had Chucky in them every night and i was emotionally drained as a kid. My parents couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, till my aunt told my mom that she let me watch Child's Play with her.

I couldn't even walk into any room if i knew there was a doll in there i would freak out screaming and crying.

But now i love the movie...just 1 thru 3 though.

I expect this movie to blow other remakes out of the water! i hope it's scares the crap out of me again!

No no i think I'm the biggest Chucky fan ever LOL. I'm 27 years old and saw Chucky next to the My Buddy Dols when i was 7 years old. NO MOVIE has ever done to me what Child's Play did. I use to run up the stairs to my room and close the door. My Buddy had to go to my parents room cuz it kept freaking me out. I am sooo hyped to see this movie and I usually hate remakes but I make a huge exception for Child's Play just as long as they remake it as a HORROR MOVIE!!!! Not like 4 and 5. Even tho i loved 2 and 3, they weren't nearly as scary as the original. As long as Brad is doing the voice and Chucky looks creepy and scary as hell, not toyish as he did in the others and you have solid actors, then this movie will definately be a success. YOu have my support. Remember..SCARY!!! HORROR!!! not horror/comedy lol

I hope the remake is good,part 3,part 4,and part 5 sucked!

Posted by: kevin on March 18, 2008 at 13:22:42

and the voice of chucky must be a scary voice , a really doll voice !!

Posted by: Steph on March 19, 2008 at 12:06:36

the original child's play is by far in my opinion the best because it was way more scarier which i think chucky should have stayed as than becoming more and more comic. i still think chucky should still have a more scary side to him. i am very interested in the remake i would definitly go and see it and when the special 20th anniversary DVD is released over here in England (im hoping that it will be) i am most definitly going out and buying it even though i already have feature DVD and all the rest. the situtaion of whether having Brad Dourif coming back and voicing chucky is a must have for me because i cannot imagine another voice coming out of the doll. please bring Brad back and voice Chucky please please!!

Posted by: Steph on March 19, 2008 at 12:13:58

oh and another thing, i first watched Child's play when i was six (well watched more like i only saw one little glimpse of the doll come alive and i screamed my head off) ever since that i did not watch it at all because it just terrified me so much, i remember my brother who was nine at the time loved it and used to torment me with it. i used to have nightmares that chucky was running about the loft that was above my bedroom and would come down and kill me. BUT NOW I LOVE CHUCKY AND WATCH THEM ALL THE TIME!!

I don't know about you guys, but I am going to be seriously ticked if they do not include Brad Dourif in this remake! I realize that it has been twenty years since they made the original, however Brad has been a part of the franchise since the beginning. He IS Chucky! It may sound as if I am being very closed-minded on the subject (I practically am), but I cannot imagine anyone replacing Brad. He is a one of a kind (under-appreciated) actor, one that cannot EVER be replaced!

what about gary busey doing the voice.

Posted by: Aneora on April 1, 2008 at 14:10:36

!!How can you do it without Brad Dourif as Chucky?? He is the Chucky!! You can't say your going to remake a film for the diehard loyal fans if you don't keep the same guy who started the roll for Chucky to begin with. You just simply can't replace that actor.. its film sucide. He is the best yet. Hes underappricated and he shouldn't be. Pkease for crying out loud. Dont ruin what makes Chucky Chucky.

Posted by: Anthony on April 1, 2008 at 16:12:45

I'm betting he'll be the voice unless they intend this to be a restart and plan for more "sequels" of this Chucky instead, then they go for someone newer. But, like you all said, noone will be able to replace Brad Dourif. Noone.

Brad Dourif is chucky and watching him in the remake of Halloween is a tease to the a CHilds play remake. Just his voice alone is wat drives that doll to be the nightmare he was to haunt my youth as a 5 year old the remake is a dream come true to the day this movie comes out i will be patiently waiting to the all the people behind the scenes make us childs play fans happy !

Posted by: Josh on April 3, 2008 at 09:04:20

No way. You can't replace Brad Dourif! His voice alone pulls off 95% or more of the scaryness of Chucky. Dude has a creepy voice. Some ordinary Joe trying to sound scary wouldn't be able to pull it off IMO.

Posted by: kyle on April 3, 2008 at 17:09:52

I can't wait to see this, love the first three child's play movies and a remake will kill, child's play one remade will rock the country!!!!

Posted by: kyle on April 3, 2008 at 17:15:00

also, they have got to make chuck closer to the original, not the bride or seed look, that wasn't scary, they have to do this right or I will 'Not' freak!!!! ( :

Posted by: kyle on April 7, 2008 at 13:41:50

we should start a child's play fan club, but no bride of seed!I think about the remake of child's play most every night ( : lol, and just imagine what it might be like, it makes me happy to just imagine, can't wait!!! and it better be f'kin scary!!!!

I know everyone keeps talking about Brad coming back as Chuck but I really hope he does. Brad Dorif is an excellent actor and I am very surprised he wasn't given in a role in more horror movies. If none of you have seen Exorcist 3, he is in that and even tho he is not Chucky, he is a phenominal actor and still gave me some chills when he spoke. Brad was very underrated as an actor. Come back Brad. Anyone here besides me still remember the chant...ade dui damballa, frencehelle santaria, uya shangu, yenya macumba. give me the power i beg of you. L'over merci de pua shairo, sacuzeteame puade mort, mortese me lour devour she, adele porte puase damballa...i cant spell it for shi** lol but I still memorize it till this day 20 years later.
