First Look at Dorian Gray

Source:ShockTillYouDrop.com
August 12, 2008

Lensing has begun at London's Ealing Studios on Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray, an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story that producers are calling a "visceral, dark horror story." Shock received a first look at the production through the photo you see below featuring Ben Barnes, as Gray, and Colin Firth.

Gray tells of a corrupt young man who somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.

Wow, is that Ben Barnes in CHARACTER? You must be joking. Dorian Gray is a blonde. They're already messing this up.

well james bond is supposed to be brunette and daniel craig works

ans also as far as I know dorian in the book was supposed to have blue eyes...well, it doesn´t matter to me, cause I think ben has absolutely the charisma to play dorian...so I definitely have all my faith in this movie!!!
it´ll be great!!!

actually Dorian Gray has dark hair. He's based off of Oscar Wilde himself who also had dark hair.

I haven't read the book in some time, so I don't remember his hair color... But one of my friendssays it's blonde, and will likely be upset by this...

But really, that's such a minor point. As long as they get his characterization down, it'll be good. And I like Ben Barnes, s o we'll see.

I'm glad there's actually a reference to this character. I didn't know where he came from when I saw "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman". And it's good to see that Ben Barnes is doing something a little more grown-up now so that we won't only recognize him as "Prince Caspian"

they should get peter petrelli to play dorian gray

Posted by: marg on August 12, 2008 at 16:16:49

who cares what the colour of "gray's" eyes and hair are.

it's the story and acting that counts.

should be an interesting movie, have scene other vertions of it.

looking forward to this one.

What is important is that Ben Barnes has that other-worldly quality, the kind of eternal youth look that is perfect for Dorian Gray, the kind of face you cannot imagine growing old. Visually, I think it is perfect casting, and I assume Colin Firth is in the role played in the original film by George Sanders - also perfect casting.

it wouldve been better if they had stuart townsend playing dorian like in the league or extraordinary gentlemen

I'm very excited, and while Ben Barnes is gorgeous, it's Colin Firth who I'm excited about. The man's such a talented actor and, as an extras special bonus for me, looks exactly like my husband!

Oh, and from my recollection of the book, Dorian Gray has dark hair.

Here is the line for the description of Dorian, found at the beginning of chapter 2: "Lord Henry looked at him. Yes, he was certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, his crisp gold hair."

I am excited about this movie but read somewhere that it won't come out until fall of 2009. Do you believe they are setting the movie up for award season?

Posted by: Brent on August 12, 2008 at 23:37:37

Strangely, that description sounds a lot like William Mosely, Barnes "Narnia" costar. Funny. However, I really doubt something that little is worth getting upset about. I mean, Jurassic Park had more dinos, Jekyll and Hyde both end up dead, Jaws had only Brody surviving, and as for Stephen King movies? Don't get me started.

AS good as Townsend was in the role before (even though the movie sucked), he wouldn't be right now... Gray needs to be in his early 20s, and Townsend is not.

Ben Barnes is a great choice.

I agree, ben barnes being cast as dorian gray is perfect & i can't wait till the film comes out. Just a long wait though. I also only knew of dorian gray after watching the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Must read more books.

I think Ben Barnes is a great choice for the role. He turns 27 next week but he still looks way younger. Coling Firth is also a great actor and I think both will do it justice. Can't wait to see it.

I just bought the book. I can't wait to read it. I think, to set himself apart from the whole Price Caspian persona, Ben Barnes is perfect for the role. I might change after I read the book. Keep rockin' it Ben!

Posted by: tishah on August 14, 2008 at 09:20:37

oh come on. even in the league of extraordinary gentleman, stuart townsend who acted as dorian gray has dark hair. its such a minor point.

Ben Barnes looks gorgeous in that picture. As for 'they're already messing this up', don't worry about. No big deal if Dorian was described as 'certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes, his crisp gold hair". Well, the first part is right. ;)

Anyway...back on topic: in the book Prince Caspian, the Prince was described as a fair-headed lad with fair skin and blue eyes (not a direct quote. Some were a bit shocked at first, but we all got over it.

And I agree with marg; it's the acting that counts. Though, when you judge Ben Barnes by looks and acting skill, he gets a perfect 10 from me!

Posted by: Doriana on August 23, 2008 at 14:10:12

It doesn't matter if Dorian's hair is dark or light or his eyes are blue or black. The only thing that matters is his beauty. But this actor (as many others who played Dorian) is not so exceendigly handsome as he should be.
Maybe only Alain Delon when he was young, could have been suitable for this part.

OMG, Ben looks so hot. I really can't wait until this movie comes. I am going to be first in line. I love Ben Barnes
